About Mini Punjab The Food Krafter
The story begins with the trauma of Partition, when Sardar Hakam Singh migrated from Pakistani Punjab. Like many displaced families, he was in search of a way to rebuild his life. He first arrived in Amritsar and later moved to Mumbai. In 1955, he shut down his small dhaba near the Delhi–Uttar Pradesh highway and relocated to Sion, where many from his community had settled.
There, he started a modest eatery, initially serving bhajiya for some days. He later introduced fried fish to the menu and named the venture Punjab Fish, operating from his small residential hut. Soon after, Sardar Bahadur Singh joined him. With prior experience working at a dhaba, they began serving fried pieces of rawas, coated in rich and flavorful masalas.

Small beginnings
In the early days, they offered just three dishes—Koliwada Rawas Fry, Koliwada Jhinga Fry, and Koliwada Pomfret Fry. These were simple snacks, packed in leaves and newspapers, meant to be enjoyed fresh out of the pan. The exceptional freshness of the fish and its distinctive taste quickly gained popularity, turning the humble roadside eatery into a runaway success.
With growing demand, Sardar Hakam Singh converted his home into a full-fledged restaurant and moved his residence to a rented house.
An expanding menu
As customers continued to queue up for their signature fried fish, they decided to expand their menu to cater to a wider range of tastes. The first additions were mutton and chicken biryani. Soon after, tandoori dishes were introduced, including chicken tikka kebabs and tandoori paneer.
Sardar Hakam Singh has no child so he invited his nephew, Surjit Singh, to join the business and help scale operations.
Expanding horizons
Since they cooked everythink is on charcoal the business soon earned a strong reputation, and for many, Punjab Fish became synonymous with Koliwada Fish Fry. The eatery attracted several Bollywood celebrities, corporte companies like Burma shell who frequently visited Koliwada to enjoy their favorite fish fry and Punjabi tandoori dishes.
The beginning of the outdoor catering venture
In 1982 Surjit Singh has done a marriage function of a needy girl of his community. In those days the material was procured by client and cooking contract was given to the caterers. Surjit Singh done the cooking without charging any money. After the success of this event Surjit Singh popularity grew, so did the demand for their food at events. This led Surjit Singh to launch his catering venture Mini Punjab Caterers, which quickly gained traction for parties, weddings, and special occasions. Mini Punjab Catering expanded rapidly, serving clients not only in Mumbai but also in cities like Pune, Aurangabad, Nashik, Ahmedabad, Surat, and across the interiors of Maharashtra.
While Punjabi cuisine remained their specialty, the group also began offering a variety of Indian and international dishes.
With the rising success of the catering business, he decided to rename Punjab Fish to Mini Punjab as this area was now as Mini Punjab due to majority of Punjabi families here. The name that was later acknowledged by Balasaheb Thackeray during a rally in the area.
Setting up branch in Ulhasnagar
Surjit singh started Ulhasnagar catering with small orders. Soon he gain success in Ulhasnagar also and started catering for large events. Then is setup small office, godown, kichen and service staff at Ulhasnagar. He use to daily go to Ulhasnagar and return back on two wheeler or by local train. Whithin span of time Mini Punjab Caterers was a brand in Ulhasnagar also.
Expansion into Bandra
Eager to grow further, he opened a new branch in Bandra, a fast-developing and upscale suburb. Initially focused on Chinese cuisine, the Bandra outlet soon evolved into a multi-cuisine restaurant, meeting the growing demand for Mini Punjab’s signature Koliwada Fish Fry and Punjabi tandoori offerings.
The move into banqueting
In the mid-1990s, the group acquired a plot of land overlooking Powai Lake, which was previously used as an open-air party venue. He transformed it into a full-scale banquet facility. Today, the space features private party halls, a central kitchen, expansive lawns for weddings and large gatherings, and a restaurant offering buffet, à la carte, and table d’hôte menus. It also includes accommodation facilities for guests.
With the business expanding in both stature and legacy, the third generation carries it forward with professional training from leading catering institutes. Yet, at its heart, the ethos remains unchanged—delivering uncompromising quality, distinctive flavors, and unmatched service.
